7 Mistakes First-Time Families Make at Disney
I have seen many a Disney trip take a turn for the worse because of something that could have been avoided.
Taking a Disney vacation sounds so magical till you actually get into the planning. Between tickets, resorts, dining reservations, apps, transportation, and park choices, it is easy to make decisions that add stress, waste money, or leave you disappointed.
I've been there.
Under-planned, and then disappointed we didn't get to ride the top rides or see the favorite characters. Over-planned, leading to meltdowns and exhaustion. Unprepared for weather with borderline heatstrokes, or so cold cause we underestimated how cold Florida really can get!
For the newbie, a Disney trip sounds magical and dreamy until you get early-planning decision fatigue, or find yourself standing in the middle of the park in sweltering heat with crying kids, not sure whether to rush to the next ride you booked or bail and give up for the day!
That's where I come in! As a Disney travel planner, I help you make the right decisions for YOUR family and avoid these common mistakes first-timers make:
Choosing the wrong Disney park tickets.
No one wants to waste money on a ticket that they don't get the most out of! Park Hopper tickets, special events, parties, and multi-day options can get confusing, and each family, depending on ages in the group, will benefit from different ones. Your tickets should match your people, travel style, budget, and energy level. It's even good to know if Walt Disney World or Disneyland is better for your trip!
Thinking you can wing it.
Being whimsical and seeing what the day holds may sound magical, but at Disney, it can cost you time and money. Understanding the app and lighting lanes, navigating reservation times, and having a rope drop and park strategy can make a huge difference. A plan of action actually helps make the day more restful and fun!
Trying to "do it all!"
Disney is packed with rides, shows, characters, snacks, and experiences, but trying to squeeze everything in often leads to exhaustion. You do not need to ride every ride to have an amazing trip. You need to leave space for rest, surprises, and those magical moments you did not plan. Realistic expectations help, trust me, you can't do it all in one trip!
Not being prepared for the weather.
So many underestimate the Florida heat and humidity and forget to prepare for rain. It will happen! I think it's actually not a true Disney experience if you don't get caught in a downpour. Knowing how to prepare for whatever Florida weather brings is crucial for a magical trip!
Choosing the wrong resort.
Location, transportation, and amenities matter, especially with young kids. Sometimes convenience is worth the extra cost. Resort choice and knowing what is best for your group are key to a great trip. Every resort, and even the neighboring hotels, has unique offerings for every budget!
Choosing the wrong parks.
This one is my hot take. Each park is so different, and knowing what is best for every person in your group helps you plan the parks that fit your desires for the type of trip you are curating! Not every trip needs to hit every park!
Waiting too long to plan.
Sure, you can plan a Disney trip on a whim, but those dream trips don't happen without some advanced planning. Dining reservations, Lightning Lanes, and popular experiences can book quickly. Planning early helps you save time, avoid stress, and enjoy the magic. No one wants to promise their princess-loving daughter a fun makeover and then miss the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique reservations!
